About This Item

Prague: Paseka, 2004 Book. As New. Hardcover. First English Edition. Large 8vo. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 18 pp. + 73 b&w plates, Editorial Note: This book is modified version of the new Czech edition of Lost Prague, Part 3: The Jewish Town by Hana Volavkova, first published by Vaclav Polacek in 1947. The captions of the photographs and paintings used in the new edition were expanded and updated by Jirina Chrastilova. The Introductory text for the English edition, written by Pavel Belina, is a shorter and updated version of Hana Volavkova's original Czech essay. This English Edition first published in 2004 by Ladislav Horacek - Paseka, Prague and Litomysl, Publication No. 682. "The large set of unique photographs in this book documents the appearance of Prague's former Jewish Town, which took centuries to create but eventually fell victim to large-scale demolition at the threshold of the modern age. The Jewish Town's picturesque character has inspired numerous writers and artists, and enchants visitors to this major Central European centre of Jewish culture with its many well-known legends such as the awesome Golem, the wondrous Rabbi Low, the fabulously rich Maisel and other historical and fictitious charcters symbolising the Prague Ghetto's remarkable history. Its administrative abolition in 1848 was followed by radical clearance in the late 19th century and the extinction of the majority of its inhabitants during World War II. The genius loci of Prague's Jewish Town, howerer, still emanates an almost magical power whose irreplaceable quality is rendered in this book." from the jacket flap. Not Price Clipped. Pristine, no wear. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Maroon Cloth with black lettering to front board and spine..
