Story of highly esteemed, former Cabinet Minister Lawrence Mannering's escape from the world of politics in favor of pastoral country lliving in the company of niece Clara (dutiful, but wishes her uncle were back in government). Idyllic life becomes even more so when the amiable Mrs. Bernice Handsell moves into the house, barely a hundred yards away, with her daughter Hester ... that is until Sir Leslie Borrowdean appears from London to coax Mannering back into politics, and, the chance discovery that charming Mrs. Handsell is none other than the Duchess of Lenchester, a personage of considerable social and political power in her own right.
