Here is a rare opportunity to own nearly two-thirdsof all publications from the highly-esteemed publishers Stone & Kimball and Herbert S. Stone & Company. This lot consists of 200 individual titles (a few titles are multi-volume sets, so, 208 individual volumes). Sidney Kramer, in A History of Stone & Kimball and Herbert S. Stone & Company, catalogues 309 titles published under the S&K/Herbert S. Stone banner, as well as a handful of privately-printed publications made by these houses.
Active between 1893-1905, these Chicago publishers produced some of the finest books of theirs or any era, and represent an important moment in the history of the book publishing arts. The quality of manufacture and design, including contributions from design artists such as Aubrey Beardsley and Frank Hazenplug, demonstrate a strong influence of the contemporary Arts and Crafts movement.
These fine books will make a wonderful addition to the library of any serious book collector.
All titles are originals, all first editions (with very few exceptions - see table below), and all in Very Good or better condition (with a few exceptions - see table below). Several titles were published in very limited editions.
Six of the books in this collection feature the book plate of Herbert S. Stone, a descendant of the Herbert S. Stone who published these titles. The plate is a design by renowned book-plate artist Dorothy Sturgis Harding. See image.
Among the highlights from the collection are:
- Four volumes of the literary magazine The Chap-Book (2 volumes bound, the rest as separate issues)- A signed copy of Some Verses by Helen Hay (another signed copy on Abe Books is on offer for $875).
- A signed copy (personally inscribed with a poem) of Clyde Fitch's Some Correspondence and Six Conversations (this copy is also unopened, suggesting that the recipient of this gift was, perhaps, less than enthusiastic about Mr. Fitch's attentions).
- The works of early food-faddist and health guru Horace Fletcher (including a rare copy of The Last Waif personally inscribed by the author).
- The first appearances in English of the plays of Maurice Maeterlinck.
- The first appearance in English of the poems of Paul Verlaine.
- The first edition of Hamlin Garland's Prairie Songs.
- A signed copy of George Santayana's Sonnets and Other Poems.
- A signed presentation copy of Laurence Gronlund's The New Economy
- A signed copy of Olive Percival's Mexico City: An Idler's Notebook (a 6-verse poetical dedication by the author)
- The first edition of Sir Richard Burton's The Jew, the Gypsy, and El Islam.
- The first edition of Kenneth Graham's (author of Wind in the Willows) The Golden Age.
CONDITION: The list below enumerates all titles, states their condition, and, where appropriate, offers brief details and comments on condition and other background (these notes are not exhaustive descriptions, but meant to cover the more conspicuous features or flaws). I have tried to be conservative in my condition designations, and to make note of particular flaws, while also considering the age of these books. Many of these books have a small "xxxxx" stamp appearing discreetly on the rear paste-down (see image); the presence or absence of this stamp is noted in the table below. Most copies will contain discreet pencil markings on end-papers from a previous collector or merchant - because these are impermanent and easily removed, I have not commented on these (typically, these consist of the Kramer number, along with the occasional comment on the edition or some detail of the book, and occasionally an old dealer price).
Because of image limitations, only 8 pictures are posted here; I have done my best to provide the most complete representation of this collection within those limits. More pictures can be made available, and detailed descriptions of particular titles made, for serious inquiries only.
SHIPPING: I will ship by Media Mail; size and weight restrictions will require that several packages be shipped. A flat rate of $200 for this shipping is applied to this listing; a partial refund will be made if actual shipping and handling is significantly below this estimate; no additional shipping will be charged if my costs for media mail exceed this amount. Other delivery arrangements can be made by purchaser request and at purchaser expense. Local pickup may be arranged, and I can personally deliver within a reasonable distance (say, 20-25 miles), with buyer covering travel expense and a reasonable delivery fee. All books will be carefully and securely packaged to ensure that none are damaged in transit.

Description:
Paris: Meynial, 1925. First Edition. George Barbier. A complete and excellent set of the five annual issues illustrated with a total of sixty beautiful pochoir plates, complete with decorated pochoir title pages. 'Falbalas and Franfreluches' (Frippery and Finery: Fashion Diaries) represents a literary and artistic collaboration of unusual elegance and sophistication. French illustrator, George Barbier (1882 - 1932) spared no effort in the making of this beautiful collection, using the finest pigments and up to thirty stencils per print to create images of the highest quality reflecting fashionable themes of the day. The plates portray romance amidst exotic lands and ages past, including a native American idyll on the Missouri, a languid mistress cocooned in a hammock in the tropical Antilles, high baroque debauchery, and, of course, a myriad of lovers depicted in Paris at the height of the chic 1920s. Each annual includes twelve pages of fine writing by Barbier's contemporaries in the Parisian scene…

Very Good or better. A charming set of the first editions virtually never found in matching period bindings. Volume I's boards are moderately soiled, with drip staining and a small tear at the fore edge, exposing the paste board. Volume II is only very lightly soiled, with less edge wear than volume I. Both volumes have 19th century marbled paste downs, with matching book plates of Francesco Bubani, of Milano. Last gathering of volume I browned/browning, with some browning on the title page, just above the anchor…

London: Edward Moxon, 1842. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Original brown cloth with a leaf of ads at the end followed by an additional collective title page and half-title page, allowing the book to form the seventh and final volume of the 1836-7 edition of Wordsworth's POETICAL WORKS. Wordsworth's last collection of new work, and somewhat scarce. This is a Presentation copy INSCRIBED by the poet on the front pastedown: "Herbert Hill/from/the Author/April 1842." Herbert Hill married Robert Southey's daughter, Bertha, in 1839 and was a neighbor of Wordsworth's living with his wife in John Fleming's cottage in Rydal. Hill served as tutor for Matthew Arnold. Both Hill and Wordsworth attended Southey's funeral in March 1843 after which Wordsworth was selected to replace Southey as England's Poet Laureate. Rebacked some time ago with nearly all of the original spine but for the tips retained. An engraved portrait of the author is laid down on the verso of the front free endpaper.
