First Edition/First Printing with all the requisite points including the FS colophon on the copyright page, jacket has correct first issue price of $2.75 and the correct back panel and flap info. This is a near fine copy in a fine, original dust jacket. A stunning presentation of the Jackson classic that is not remaindered, not price clipped ($2.75 intact), and not ex-lib. The book is in near fine condition with a crisp, tight binding (probably never read), bright lettering on the spine, and beautiful white pages throughout; only flaws to be found are some minor staining to both the front and rear paste downs and a very mild yellowing to the spine. Housed in a pristine dust jacket that shows only minimal shelf wear and a very minor darkening to the spine. This copy is by far the best I've seen and one of only a few on the market in this kind of collectible condition. Protected in a mylar cover and shipped in a sturdy box.

Description:
Steinbeck, John. The Long Valley. New York: Viking Press, 1938. First Printing of the First US Edition. First Printing. A Near Fine copy with the usual age darkening to the front pastedown in a Very Good plus unclipped dust jacket with gentle wear to the extremities, and a short closed edge tear at the head of the spine. A collectible copy of this collection of classic Steinbeck fiction. This volume of stories collected with the encouragement of his longtime editor Pascal Covici serves as a wonderful introduction to the work of Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck. Set in the beautiful Salinas Valley of California, where simple people farm the land and struggle to find a place for themselves in the world, these stories reflect Steinbeck's characteristic interests: the tensions between town and country, laborers and owners, past and present. Included here are the O. Henry Prize-winning story "The Murder"; "The Chrysanthemums," perhaps Steinbeck's most challenging story, both personally and artistically;…

London: Gaberbocchus Press [Printed by Moll-Winter in Lubeck], 1949. First Edition. 8vo. 112pp. Publisher's grey cloth titled in dark red to the spine. Slight soiling and discolouration of the cloth, otherwise a very clean, sharp copy. Internally clean, although the poor paper stock has resulted in some uniform toning. One of the scarcest Gaberbocchus publications, and a fine collaboration from the wildly creative Kavan, one of the few authors to have constructed a nom-de-plume, and then adopted that pseudonym as their real name, amongst numerous other achievements, of course.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1930. First edition. 8vo. 284pp. + xxxivpp. Index. Publisher's blue grey cloth titled and decorated in red and brown, minor wear, and very good copy indeed in a similarly attractive example of the dustjacket, lightly discoloured to spine and with some very light chipping to the extremities. Strong and bright. Internally clean. Found within this copy is a letter about Gertrude Bell's involvement with the anti-suffrage movement, from Lady Jersey to Lady Bell written in April 1927. The letter is in reply to a request for Lady Jersey's memories on this topic by Lady Bell, who was editing and publishing Gertrude Bell's writings. Lady Jersey was President of the Women's National Anti-Suffrage League. The letter begins "As regards the Anti-Suff in which Gertrude took such inspiring care, I fear nothing beyond memory remains." After detailing some recollections, Lady Jersey writes: "The last thing I clearly remember about Gertrude in this connection is that she and I as…

The first UK edition (first printing), issued five months after the US edition. 8vo. 280pp. Blue smooth-weave cloth lettered in red at the spine with a small black-stamped falcon design to the backstrip and to the upper corner of the front board. Publisher's blue top edge stain, very slightly patchy. Just a trace of light bruising to the spine ends and a touch of very light spotting to the fore edge, with a little further spotting to the half-title, title page, and one or two further preliminary and concluding leaves. Free endpapers lightly browned and a tiny bump to the tips of the two lower corners. A touch of very light soiling to occasional leaf margins and, once or twice, to the text block. A very good copy. No dust wrapper. The first and only full-length novel featuring Hammett's celebrated gumshoe Sam Spade. The print runs of the first US and first UK editions are unknown, but considering the relative…
