About This Item

Nicosia: Politistiko Hidryma Trapezes Kyprou, 2009. Brand new. Bilingual (greek-english) edition. Folio, 45 x 60 cm; contains six facsimiles of engravings by Louis-Francois Cassas, which are to be found in the Foundation’s collections and show views of Cyprus towns: Cyreneia, Larnaca, Famagusta, Bellapais and St. Hilarion.

Louis-Francois Cassas was a designer, engraver, sculptor and archeologist, who visited Cyprus twice, in February and April of 1785. Today, the few designs of Cassas make up the first successful attempt at a figurative representation of these Cyprus monuments that have been so much celebrated by artists and writers. In 1799, there appeared the edition "Voyage pittoresque de la Syrie, de la Phenicie, de la Palestine et dans la Basse Egypte" together with the six sheets of Cassas containing the views of Cyprus. This edition is perhaps the most important illustrated book of the 18th century on Middle East and Cyprus.
