Description

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1962. First Edition. Wraps. Very good. The first paperback edition, issued simultaneously with the hardcover. Octavo: 160 p. Original printed paper wrappers. Minor creasing to the spine, with just a hint of edgewear; otherwise very good. Signed by Robert Creeley on the title page, with an autograph letter signed (ALS) on Creeley's letterhead to Richard Brautigan, dated November 23, 1981, in which Creeley gives the names of friends in Ketchikan, Alaska, where Brautigan was to have a reading that December 5. Creeley also says, "having you here was a very great pleasure despite all else." In the definitive biography of Richard Brautigan, Jubilee Hitchhiker (2012), William Hjortsberg - from whose collection this book and letter comes - reveals that this "despite all else" refers to a harrowing night involving the rape of a neighbor, an intruder (likely the rapist) in the Creeley's bedroom, and the discovery in the morning of a large butcher knife behind their Buffalo, New York cottage.
