First line

St Jerome tells us that Lucretius was born in the year 94 BCE; that a love potion rendered him insane; that he wrote his poem in random moments of sanity; that Cicero edited (or maybe proofread) the manuscript he left behind when he committed suicide at the age of forty-four.
