About This Item

London: Phaidon Press, 1948. 362 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H). 112 b&w illustrations. "Against the background of the rich and creative period of the Renaissance, (Gregorovius) portrays one of its most notorious and elusive characters - Lucrezia Borgia. Surrounding her are shown the Borgia Pope himself, his son Cesare, his mistresses Vanozza and Giulia Farnese, the Duke Alfonso of Ferrara and many of the artists and writers of the time; all are etched in vividly against the colourful background. (The) illustrations not only provide pictorial comment to the text, but also (give) a varied view of Renaissance civilization, especially of life in Rome and Ferrara." Light edge wear to boards, light browning to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has light edgewear, tiny chips at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light browning to spine and flap-folds, light soiling - tiny stain on spine, one small and two tiny edge tears.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good.
