Period bound purple cloth, gilt stamped spine, red speckled edges. 8vo (21.5cm). pp. vi, [2] contributors and ad for bound first six volumes, 520. Very Good+. Cloth a bit mottled, internally near fine, no ownership. Monthly British literary periodical 1859-1907, Mason was the first editor (1859-1864). First appearance of Kingsley's The Water-Babies chapters 1-3, a satire in defense of Darwin's Origin of the Species. Contributors scanned and include Rev. W. Whewell "A New Hexmeter translation of Homer's Iliad", and America, Our Special Correspondent in Washington, Border States, Free West, New England States and the outlook of the (Civil) war (1861-65)..
