This is a very scarce program for the 1st American performance of the opera "MADAM BUTTERFLY" by Giacomo Puccini. The title page of the program states: "First Performance in America and First Presentation in English on October 15th, 1906, at the Columbia Theatre, Washington, D.C." Published by Boosey & Co., New York.Puccini wrote five versions of the opera. The original two-act version,which was presented at the world premiere at La Scala on 17 February 1904, was withdrawn after the disastrous premiere. Nice condition lot of 12 issues of "THE MAGIC WORLD" magazine - complete run of 12 consecutive issues from Volume 2. The issues are dated April 15, 1918 (No. 1) to March 15, 1919 (No. 12). Four issues contain an illustrated advertisement for "The Challenge Handcuff Act, as Presented by HARRY HOUDINI" ("the strongest act in the business and one that has puzzled the entire world"). Each issue contains 12 pages and features a front-cover photograph of a magician accompanied by a biographical sketch. Published and edited by Dr. J.E. Pierce in Philadelphia.
The issues contain advertisements (some are illustrated) for magic books and accessories, "Magical Tips," and instructions on how to perform a variety of tricks (such as "Multiplying Handkerchiefs in the Air," "Sack Escape," "Great Trunk Act," "Dove Trick," "Handcuff Act," "Japanese Butterfly Trick," "Spirit Forms," "Phantom Billiard Balls," "Flying Card Trick," "Hindoo Mystery," "Crystal Bowl of Fire," "Mind Reading Trick," "Envelope Spirit Writing" and dozens more).
Condition:
The issues are in overall very good condition. Mostly clean with only an occasional light stain; no writing, foxing or tears found. The issues are staple-bound with no loose pages (with the exception of No. 1 which is not bound, as issued).

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
