Bodley Head, 1955-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Lewis, C.S. (Clive Staples) : The Magician's Nephew. London : The Bodley Head, 1955. First impression. Size is octavo (8vo), 7.75"/20cm. Bound in publisher's green cloth over boards, bright silver lettering imprinted on spine. DJ in green w/black or white lettering (front) or white with black lettering (back); front also features a Pauline Baynes illustration in black and peach of Digory and Polly peeking into the uncle's room. Blank endpapers/flyleaves; 183 numbered pp plus one blank page at end. Many Baynes illustrations in b&w (none in color)scattered through text.Condition notes:A lovely, highly collectible copy of this Narnia classic, sixth in the series (in Lewis' original, published, order). This is the rare 1955 British First edition/First Impression by The Bodley Head. Included is the original dustjacket -- not a reproduction, not price-clipped. Binding is slightly cocked off square, solid. DJ shows tanning and foxing from age (see photos), several chips and small tears, at top corners, top of spine. The DJ also contains the only writing observed anywhere in this copy, discreetly in two places: in the upper right corner of the front inside flap of the DJ, where '1.50' has been written 1/8" tall, unobtrusive; the second, a small, neat numeral '6' on the DJ spine between the title and author. Both endpapers show slight tanning and foxing, the back slightly more than the front. Textblock edges are lightly tanned and with a trace of foxing. The green boards are nice, unfaded, corners not bumped, a slight dimple on rear top edge where perhaps the book was dropped. Spine top and bottom slightly rolled. We seal, wrap, box,and insure your package to protect your investment. We touch every book we offer for sale.

Description:
1549 GREEK Herodian Roman Histories Commodus Marcus Aurelias Poliziano RARE

Herodian's 'History of Rome' is a collection of eight books covering the period of the death of Marcus Aurelius to the beginning of Gordian III's reign. Herodian's account is first-person narrative of one of the most politically unsettled times of the Roman Empire. Important names covered in Herodian's 'History' include Commodus, Julianus, Severus, and Pertinax, as well as the history of Zosimus.

This 1549 Greek is incredibly rare and desirable. It features both the Latin and Greek translations by Poliziano. According to the USTC, there are only three examples in any institutional holding in American institutions! Very rare!

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Slipcase. Very Good. First edition, second state with illustration entitled "Titian's Moses." From the library of Eugene Field. 631 pp. plus a 1-page publisher's advertisement at the rear. Rebound in full morocco and decorative endpapers with raised bands. Gilt top edge. Light rubbing to book's extremities. Custom/matching slipcase rubbed on the corners. Original brown cloth bound into the back of the book The book appears to be signed by Mark Twain on the title page and Eugene Field on a rear flyleaf. The signatures, though quite convincing, are likely forgeries made by the famed forger Eugene "Pinny" Field II (1879-1946) and Harry Dayton Sickles, working in tandem. Field's father, Eugene Field (1850-1895), was a newspaper columnist, poet, and book collector. After his death, Eugene Field's book collection passed on to his son. The younger Field developed the ability to imitate the autographs of the authors his father had collected as well as the signature of his… Read More
