From the rear cover
The river region referred to as the Mississippi River Delta is a fifty-two-mile-wide, two-hundred-mile-long alluvial plain formed by silt deposits of thousands of years. From Port Gibson to Memphis, the grand mansions rise from the rich soil the river left behind and recall the quiet majesty of another age.
As much as the people who live there have made an impact on the river itself, so too has the river had an effect on the homes in which they live. Ingrained in the Delta's architecture are history, devotion, pretension, honor, and avarice--lasting testimony to man's ingenuity in the face of nature's constant attempts to discomfort or dislodge him.
