Born in 1925 Omaha, Nebraska, Malcolm Little left school at age 15. Six years later, he was convicted of burglary and sent to jail. Released in 1952, he dedicated himself to building the Black Muslims, and adopted the name, Malcolm X. He withdrew from that movement in March 1964, organizing the first Muslim Mosque Inc. and later the non-religious Organization of Afro-American Unity. He would make trips to the Middle East and Africa in 1964, and 3 months after returning, Malcolm X was assassinated in New York. Most of his selected essays herein were from his last year.
