Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1862. Second edition, enlarged. Hardcover. Very good overall. This edition was published when McClellan was Commander in Chief of the Northern Armies. During the Civil War this book was especially popular with drummer boys, who particularly liked the illustrations. According to Thomas Wentworth Higginson (a minister, militant abolitionist and soldier), writing in his Civil War journal on June 27, 1863, "Have I ever said what is the favorite reading-primer of our drummer boys? McClellan's Bayonet Exercises -- large type, short words, subject intelligible, pictures fascinating; it combines all merits" (The Complete Civil War Journal and Selected Letters of Thomas Wentworth Higginson'. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2000. p156). Higginson served as colonel of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, the first federally authorized black regiment, recruited from freedmen for Union service. 8vo, 118, 24 plates, illustrations, index. With publisher's Military Publications advertisements printed at the end papers. Dark green stamped buckram, gilt title at spine. Rear board slightly marked; otherwise very good, the fascinating plates bright and clean.
