Handsomely bound in the original red pebble-grained cloth (imitation leather), with blind-stamped rectangular borders and gilt titles on the front cover and spine. On the cover are gold-stamped images of the sphinx (sphynx) and a pyramid. All gilt stamping is still bright and shiny. Original yellow (silk?) endpapers are a bit speckled but all other pages are creamy white, clean and unmarked with NO foxing. NO owner's name or bookplate. No date of publication (but copyright 1898). Hinges are perfect. Oblong Hardcover. 11" wide by 8" tall. All edges gilt. This souvenir photo-album has 109 leaves, mostly printed on the rectos only (i.e. versos are usually blank). Most of the photos are full-page. John Marsham was a 17th-century English historian known for his expertise and study on chronology – from Old Testament history to Egypt and British. His most detailed and elaborate work was 'Chronicus Canon'; a work which distinguished Hebrew, Greek, and Egyptian histories and how they pertained to the Old Testament. According to the NGBD, Marsham, in this work,
"was the first person who proposed to the learned world the hypothesis of four collateral dynasties of Egyptian kings, reigning at the same time over different districts of that country; in order to reduce the extravagant chronology of the Egyptian records to a conformity with that of the Hebrew Scriptures. He also supposes that the Jews derived several of their rites from the Egyptians"

Nicolas Philippe de Forbin was an early 19th-century French historian and art antiquary, who, in 1817, set out on a voyage to the Levant to view, study, and acquire ancient pieces of art. The voyage took Forbin and his traveling party to the Holy Land and Jerusalem, Syria, Athens, Constantinople, and even the Dead Sea.
His journal of the excursion covers his discoveries giving special attention to the Egyptian pyramids and the Great Sphinx. This undated first English edition includes impressive sketch illustrations of ruins, the Temple of Karnak, ruins of ancient Jericho, Castle at Cairo, the Pyramids at Giza, and the ancient walls of Jerusalem. Smit, 3 photogravure reproductions of radiographs, and 7 photogravure illustrations in text. In original green cloth, worn along joints and edges, with 3cm peel along joint near head, yet sound and entire, with some reinforcement. Text and illustrations in excellent shape, free of foxing or other blemishes. Top edge gilt. Old bookplates removed from front endleaves. Old booksellers' notes in pencil on front pastedown. References: Wood, p. 192; Nissen ZBI 110. Most probably only 100 copies were issued of this very rare and important contribution to the mammals of Egypt.
