About This Item

New York, George Braziller, 1978, hardcover, 118 pp, First Edition in English, First Printing stated, Near Fine in Very Good dustjacket. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings, previous owner's address sticker on copyright page. Dustjacket price-clipped, slight edge nicks and bumps, in new Brodart sleeve. This eighth volume in the series features manuscripts from the Biblioteque Nationale in Paris and shows a new style of illustration known as 'grisaille', where the figures are painted in a semi-lucent monochrome, thus moving away from the richer effects of panel pictures, and beginning to establish illumination as a artistic category of its own. Profusely illustrated throughout with 40 color plates and 13 black-&-white figures. Includes Selected Bibliography.
