Legible and clean script. Small amount of separation at folds. Envelope has manuscript cancellation for Salisbury, New Hampshire plus .10 cent mailing rate. Very good Condition. Informative and chatty letter from Clarissa Green to her husband Josiah. Second part of letter to "Friend William". The Green family of Salisbury New Hampshire is well documented although we're curious as to why Josiah is residing in Charlestown, Massachusetts, away from his wife in Salisbury. Nonetheless, Josiah worked as a carpenter and clock repairer and was active in the local Baptist Church. Interestingly, a good portion of the letter talks about the organization of the "Christian Church" in Salisbury. "The Christian chh. was organized here without ceremony last Saturday week, with 8 newly baptized members to start with, & then voted in Mr. Burden, Jo Sanborn, Osgood Adams & 6 or 7 others & last Sabbath baptized 7 more, in all about 18 or 20. Mr. M- is to preach here half the time. I feel quite composed, it is so much better than to have a chh. here call'd Baptist, that we can't fellowship or conscientiously walk with." The second half of the letter to "Friend William" sounds as though Clarissa Green is a preacher herself...or perhaps William needs to hear some gospel. "Ever cherish the sentiment, that infinite wisdom & goodness holds in his almighty hands all your future lot, & in dealing it out to you, he cannot be mistaken in what will certainly be for your greatest good; do all your duty from day to day & never distrust his goodness; ever endeavour to keep a calm & peaceful mind, from every murmur & from every unnecessary anxiety free; go straight forward, & may the blessing of the Christian's God be yours, this shall ever be the prayer of your sincere friend, C. Green." An interesting look at the formation of a new church within a small community. A complete transcript of this 1009 word letter is included. Manuscript cancellations for Salisbury, New Hampshire are uncommon.
