About This Item

Toronto: Macmillan, 1995. 276 pp, folio (12 3/4" H). Integral ribbon bookmark. B&w and colour photographs, colour silhouettes. "The central theme is the courage of thousands of men - most of them from ordinary backgrounds in Britain and the Empire, but including important groups from countries overrun by Germany - who survived one of the most severe and prolonged periods of physical danger and mental strain any group of people has ever been asked to bear. Over 55,500 of them were killed. The principal content allocates ten pages to each of 25 aircrew, who, often straight from school, served as pilots, navigators, bomb-aimers, signallers, flight engineers and air gunners in Bomber Command in World War 2. Each has a biography, a photograph of his memorabilia, a handwritten reminiscence and a painted silhouette showing him as he is in 1994. Thus he will make his mark in history, and you, the reader, will be able to judge what manner of man he was. You will also be able to decide how much you owe to men like him for the fact that today Europe is entirely free, and not enslaved under a single master-race." Canadian airmen included: Air Cdre W.J Burnett, DSO, OBE, DFC, AFC, MiD / Sqn Ldr R.G. Dale, DSO, DFC / Flt Lt D. Elliott / Sqn Ldr D.M. Peden, DFC / Sqn Ldr J.C. Turnbull, DFC. small slight bump at the top corner of approx. last 20 pages, the corners of the boards have been bumped lightly. Dust jacket has some very minor edge wear, very light wrinkling at the top/bottom of the flap-folds.. First Canadian Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Illus. by Michael Pierce, silhouettes. Photography by Jacqueline Gibson and Terry Pickering..
