(S)he was in turn a reporter, music critic, and society editor, but she spunkily created her own book columns, and reviewed and interviewed and made friends with hundreds of American, French, English and other writers whose success in midland America she helped to promote by her profound involvement in their work. For almost fifty years at the Tribune she took an active share in the life of her times - not only as a book reviewer but as a bookshop proprietor and as an advocate of good causes, from women's suffrage to freedom of expression for the writer.
