San Francisco: Surveyor General's Office, 1860. J. Bien. Large original map of California measuring 91 x 77 cm (35 3/4" x 30 1/4"). This was the first map to survey the state with exact scale using 18 miles to an inch. The key that lists 433 surveyed properties shows that virtually all were still identified by the older great rancheros, church property and very little by the early settlers. It uses hachures to indicate relief (This was the older method used from 1799 to long after the Civil War to indicate the direction of steepest slopes). Typical coloration where the folds were when folded but in very good condition with each name being able to be identified. Both San Francisco and San Diego were, of course, at this time had large populations and Los Angeles is mostly undeveloped territory. James W. Mandeveille was a leader also in preventing sufferage for African Americans even after the 15th Amendment passed, he also had served in both the California State Assembly and Senate being famous for being the only California official to twice resign from the State Senate. The first resignation was because he felt being appointed the U.S. Surveyor General for California was far more important than serving in the State Senate.

Biomonitoring is a vital and rapidly growing field. Freshwater Biomonitoring and Benthic Macroinvertebrates presents a state-of-the-art look at the use of benthic macroinvertebrates (aquatic insects, molluscs, crustaceans, and worms) in the biological assessment of water quality in lakes and streams. The use of these organisms has increased dramatically in the past two decades in both North America and Europe; no other comprehensive overview of the topic is available. This book contains contributions from nineteen experts from North America, Europe, and Australia. Some chapters contain updates and syntheses of new information on previously reviewed topics, while others present the first detailed coverage of a topic. The book includes much useful… Read More
