Geoffrey Bles, London, 1957. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. Red coloured boards with silver coloured titles to the backstrip. Illustrated dustwrapper, by Roland Collins, with yellow and white coloured titles to the front panel and black, yellow and white coloured titles to the backstrip. Black and white photograph of the author to the rear dustwrapper panel. Eugen Reichenbach, born and bred in Vienna, fled Europe prior to the outbreak of World War II. He became an American citizen, but, the duality of his life makes him restless and he returns to Europe after World War II after the death of his mother. He is a bureaucrat in the World Universities Relief Organisation stationed in a city torn between Tito's Republic and Italy when an old friend from his youth finds him and awakens in Eugen his youthful idealism, which leads to a series of events that change his tranquil life. But, in a post world War environment integrity and morals are difficult to define ... Rubbing of the backstrip edges with some fading to the top edge and rubbing of the book corners. Uniform tanning of the text block edges and age toning of the pages. Faint foxing to the text block edges. Offset tanning to the end pages. Rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and panels with signing of the backstrip and the rear panel. Some handling marks to the rear panel and there was a small split to the top and bottom edges of the rear panel. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [6], 7 - 349, [3] pages..
