JOEL MYERSON is Carolina Distinguished Professor of American Literature at the University of South Carolina, where he edited the annual Studies in the American Renaissance (1977-1996). His most recent publications include Ralph Waldo Emerson: An Annotated Bibliography of Criticism, 1980-1991 (coauthor, Greenwood, 1994), Emerson's Antislavery Writings (coeditor, 1995), The Cambridge Companion to Henry David Thoreau (editor, 1995), and edition of Louisa May Alcott's The Inheritance (editor, 1997), and The Selected Letters of Ralph Waldo Emerson (editor, 1997). He is now preparing with Ronald A. Bosco, a multi-volume edition of The Later Lectures of Ralph Waldo Emerson.
