About This Item

New York, New York, U.S.A.: Grosset and Dunlap, 1911. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Fair-Good/Fair-Good. Book # 5 (of 6) in the author's second bestselling series of children's books from the early 20th-century, designed as "happy books for happy girls,'' written especially for "her majesty the little American girl." These featured a plucky 12-year girl, Marjorie Maynard, who is "up to mischief, but full of goodness & sincerity,'' as she embarks on a new adventure in each book. Here, she is captured by Gypsies & sees the circus. Orig. published in 1911, this is a FIRST EDITION, unknown printing, with the First State DJ (with black-and white engraved illustration to center front, inside a red-rimmed box, lettered in black). Bound in light green cloth lettered in darker green to front & spine, this hardcover 8vo has 241 pages + ads for other series titles in rear, glossy frontispiece (author unattributed). Condition is Fair-Good: generally quite clean, but downgraded due to fading & dampstaining to both boards, rubbing to extremities, with mild fraying at lower edges. Else, binding strong & straight, hinges secure, pages creamy white with mild, age-appropriate tanning to edges; unmarked save for old gift inscription to ffep. The unclipped DJ is also Fair-Good, with some significant chips & overall darkening/edgewear; nicely protected in clear mylar cover Free! Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same Day Shipping on all orders received by 2 pm Weekdays (Pacific); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day.
