Description:
London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1966. 1st Edition. Paperback. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes. The British and U.S. first editions of the eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. This is a proof copy of the first volume of the official biography, spanning the years 1874 to 1900, from Churchill's birth, to his early career as a soldier and war correspondent, to his return to England from an American lecture tour in order to embark on his storied political career. This copy is in very good+ condition. It is bound in unmarked tan wraps. The half-title reads: "PROOF COPY This proof copy has been prepared for Mrs. Jackson." The name Mrs. Jackson is handwritten in ink. The card covers are in sound condition with light soiling and just a lttle wear at edges. There are no tears or losses. The contents…

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., 1933. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a full set of four British first edition, first printings in dust jackets, each volume housed in its own full crimson morocco Solander case. The British first trade edition of Winston Churchills monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, is physically impressive. The books measure 9.25 x 6.25 inches and are roughly 2 inches thick. Each is bound in plum cloth with beveled edges and the Marlborough arms in gilt on the front cover. Moreover, each volume is profusely illustrated, bound with headbands, and gilt top edge. Unfortunately, the plum cloth binding of Volumes I-III proved highly susceptible to sun fading. (A different, more fade-resistant dye was used in Volume IV.) Without dust jackets, Volumes I-III are nearly always faded and jacketed first editions are scarce. Particularly scarce are first printing jackets for Volumes I & II. Collectors should be wary of price-clipped dust jackets; later impression Volume I & II dust jackets state either "2nd Impression" or "3rd Impression" on the lower front flap beside the price. No such problem applies to Volumes III & IV, which each had only a single printing. Additionally, all four dust jackets proved highly susceptible to soiling and toning. This full, four-volume British first trade edition set is scarce thus, featuring near fine first printing volumes in first printing dust jackets varying from very good to near fine. The bindings are strikingly bright and tight. We note only a hint of sunning to the Vol. I spine ends corresponding to jacket creases and chips, a shallow, even strip of sunning to the lower Vol. II spine, and tiny bumps to the Vol. IV corners. The contents are crisp, tight, and clean. All four volumes feel unread. Trivial spotting appears confined to the Vol. II first and final leaves and fore edges. The only previous ownership marks are an inked April 37 gift inscription on the Vol. I front free endpaper recto and a tiny Oxford booksellers sticker affixed to the lower Vol. III front pastedown. A partial, cosmetic gutter split to the rear Vol. III endpapers does not affect binding integrity. The dust jackets are noteworthy survivors. Intact prices on each lower front flap unequivocally confirm first printing. All four jackets show some endemic spine toning. Soiling is modest, substantially confined to the blank rear faces of the first three volumes, a small horizontal mark to the lower Vol. I spine, and a small circular stain to the upper Vol. III spine. Apart from some shallow chip losses to the lower Vol. I spine, losses are fractional, confined to hinge and flap fold corners. Wear is trivial and confined to extremities, apart from a vertical crease to the Vol. I spine adjacent to the rear hinge. All four dust jackets are protected beneath removable, clear, archival covers. Each volume is housed in its own full crimson goatskin clamshell case featuring rounded and hubbed spine with gilt decorated and gilt-rule framed raised spine bands, gilt spine print, and gilt-ruled borders on the covers framing the Marlborough arms in gilt. Winston Churchill's biography of Marlborough was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the final volume. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's 1930s "wilderness years". It may not be incidental that Churchills great work of the 1930s was about a great ancestor; Churchill may have wondered more than once if the life history he was writing would eclipse his own. Richard Langworth says "To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough." When Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953, it was partly for mastery of historical and biographical description displayed in Marlborough. Reference: Cohen A97.2(I-IV).a, Woods/ICS A40(aa), Langworth p.166.

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., 1934. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Here is a jacketed British first edition, first printing of Volume II. Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the fourth and final volume. Churchill originally considered the idea of the biography in 1898, returning to it in earnest in 1928. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s. The final volume was published on the eve of the Second World War in 1938. Richard Langworth says "To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough." The first edition of Marlborough was originally issued in four volumes between 1933 and 1938. It was very well received - both critically and aesthetically. The first…

Description:
London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1930. First edition, first printing. Full leather. This is a finely bound copy of the first edition, first printing of Churchills autobiography. My Early Life sold very well at the time and has seen a great many editions since, many of them collectible in their own right, but of course a premium attaches to first editions. The challenge for collectors is that the plum colored binding of this edition proved especially susceptible to fading, soiling, and wear; nearly all copies are considerably spine faded. Hence this finely bound example. We commissioned the binding in full dark plum morocco, deferential to the original binding color. The binding features hubbed spine with gilt-tooled and decoratively framed raised bands, gilt lion rampant in the unprinted compartments, and twin brown spine labels. The beveled edge boards are framed in gilt and gilt-tooled turn-ins framing handsome marbled endpapers. The contents are bound with silk head and tail bands and gilt…

Description:
London: Macmillan and Company, 1906. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is a first edition set of Winston Churchill's biography of his father, Lord Randolph Churchill. The first edition, only printing, is aesthetically pleasing, featuring deep red cloth, untrimmed page edges, gilt stamping, and the family coat of arms in gilt on the front covers. However, the red cloth binding of this edition proved quite susceptible to fading and wear and the contents to heavy spotting. First edition sets are not especially uncommon, but collector worthy sets are scarce. This set is in very good condition. The red cloth bindings remain square, tight, and bright. There is modest shelf wear to extremities as well as modest scuffs and blemishes, a bump to the upper front corner of Volume II, and some abrasion to the lower Volume I rear corner. Shelf presentation is quite respectable for the edition, with no appreciable color shift between the covers and spine and bright spine gilt. The contents remain…
