VG, clean and unmarked. originally published in 1905. Chesnut (1823-86) was wife of James Chesnut, Jr., United States Senator from South Carolina, 1859-1861, and afterward an Aide to Jefferson Davis and a Brigadier-General in the Confederate Army. Her memorable diary of the Civil War years has both historical and literary merit. The great historian of the American South Comer Vann Woodward (1908-99) won the 1982 Pulitzer Prize for history for this much-praised work.
