Description

1 small Temple stamp FLEP, Pocket & check out slip intact, else contents appear as unread & unblemished with like green decorated cloth covered boards displaying no significant surface/edge wear, as shown. The Jewish British author's novel based on the life and works of his friend, the British Nova Scotia-based artist George Wylie Hutchinson. Though Hutchinson had illustrated some of Zangwill's earlier novels, this work is illustrated by the Swedish-American Thure de Thulstrup. It's both cynical and sentimental and has moments of racism and sexism as well as passages that are overwrought and moments that are melodramatic. But all that said: I like what it dares to do. I like that it's clear-headed about things like class and poverty. And most of all I enjoyed that it's a readable yet ambitious novel with both complex characterization and lots of plot.
