Two vols. 4to. viii, 650; [4], 756 pp. With 37 copper-engraved plates, numerous text diagrams, illustrations, tables, equations. Uniformly bound in contemporary half-calf over marbled boards, marbled fore-edges, blue-tinted endpapers, gilt lettering & ruling on spines (minor wear, rubbing to fore-edges, expertly rebacked w/ original spines laid nearly seamlessly back down, corners renewed, occasional very light foxing & toning), still an excellent set from the library of Robert Honeyman, IV, w/ his red morocco bookplate on front pastedown of vol. I. First edition of this valuable reference work and contribution to scientific biography chronicling the state of science at the end of the 18th century. Hutton has included entries on D’Alembert, Copernicus, Newton, Lagrange, Napier, Fermat, Ferguson, Benjamin Franklin, Galileo, and many others, as well as extended descriptions of discoveries and inventions on balloons, guns, mathematical and scientific instruments, artillery, electrical machines, and more. Hutton (1737-1823) was a gifted mathematican who operated his own school of mathematics at Newcastle-on-Tyne by 1760, surveyed the city of Newcastle, and later published Principles of Bridges, Mathematical Tables, Course of Mathematics, Recreations in Mathematics, and more.
