A great one, indeed. All the hardships experienced in the first, say, 30 pages are definitely worth it. In the beginning, there was the "What!?" A hard one to read: accepted. Yet by the time you learn a basic jiddish vocab list on the fly, the story gets so minutely and subtly elaborate you practically feel yourself appear in the WWII-soaked streets of Vilna, or Warsaw, and literally get sick from the abrupt immediacy of traveling from there to suburban NY. In fact I hate this word, but this novel is truly enchanting, offering a magnificent collage-like vision of the story of three generations of Jewish women.
