Description

New York: Pantheon Books, Inc, 1943. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Near Fine/Good. E. McKnight Kauffer (dust jacket). Large 8vo. Pp. 700. Notes, bibliography, index. Black cloth, titles stamped in gilt in blue panel on the spine. Spine ends just a touch rubbed, boards crisp and binding tight, leaves crisp and bright. In the two-color Kauffer illustrated dust jacket, $5.00 price intact on front flap. Dime-size scuff to top right of front panel. Jacket edges rubbed and age toned, fold between rear panel and spine nearly separated, spine darkened and ends chipped. "This book is an attempt to write history as the biography of man and from it to gain a view of the future of man." Divided into two sections: the Formation of the Human Individual and the Formation of the Human Collective. With a jacket blurb from his friend and Institute for Advanced Study colleague Albert Einstein. The E. McKnight Kauffer dust jacket is slightly outside his usual style of the era, presenting a classical profile in silhouette amid a graph featuring icons of man's development, notably, for 1943, stressing the technology of war. Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve. .
