Description

London: George Bell & Sons, 1900. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 9" by 6". Not Stated. The first edition of this uncommon biography of Victorian poet Coventry Patmore by Basil Champneys. Illustrated with a frontispiece, 4 plates and 1 folding plate to Volume II. Collated complete. Coventry Kersey Dighton Patmore (1823-1896) was an English poet and literary critic. He is regarded as one of the best Victorian poets, and is best known for his book of poetry The Angel in the House, a narrative poem about the Victorian ideal of a happy marriage. In this volume, Champneys gives an account of Patmore's life, combined with excerpts from his correspondence. A page of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally very smart, with just a couple of small faint marks to the spines and rear boards. Hinges are starting but are holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with some spotting to the first and last few pages, and to the fore edge, affecting the occasional page. Very Good
