New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1875. First Edition. . Leather. Very Good+. Volume 2 of Sherman's memoirs. Black leather with blind-stamped simple borders front and back, gilt titling and raised bands on spine, top edge of text block is gilt, marbled end papers, publisher's advertising on last pages, tiny bookseller's plate at back. Book has been professionally rebound and had much fascinating additional material bound in at the same time, as well as a list of said materials: on the end paper is a sepia photograph of Sherman and his staff; frontispiece is an engraved portrait of Sherman; a copy of General Brayson's order expelling the Bishop of Natchez; an engraved portrait of General A.E. Burnside; a note signed by Senator General John A. Logan; a note signed by secretary of War William W. Belknap; a letter to General Coppee; an engraved portrait of Admiral D.E. Farrague; an engraved portrait of Major-General George H. Thomas; an engraved portrait of Major-General H.W. Slocum; signature of General Benjamin F. Butler; war song lyric sheet "Bummers Come and Meet Us;" an engraved portrait of Robert E. Lee; an engraved portrait of General Philip Sheridan; an engraved portrait of Secretary of State William H. Seward; war song lyric sheet "Monitor and the Merrimac;" an engraved portrait of Major-General George G. Meade. A pocket on last end paper holds a folded black and white map showing the marches of the forces under Sherman's command. Book is in a slip-case covered with blue cloth with black leather edges. 409 pages Leather in in great shape, there are some rubbed spots on spine, hinge cracked at table of contents, map has several closed tears along fold lines and at corners, some illustrations have foxing. Slip-case has light wear to corners. This is an extremely handsome book - clean, bright and tight. Shipping charges are calculated for a standard parcel under 1 kg.
