Famed full-color frontispiece is intact, as is tipped-in protective tissue. All eight B&W engravings are intact, including frontispiece. (Plate on page 97 has a deckled bottom edge.)Spine is discolored and darker than rest of jacket, with slight wear on heel and top. Pages are age tanned and have small stains. Two of the pages are uncut.All four endpapers are significantly discolored with a black waxy substance (see photos), something like crayon.

Boston: Little, Brown & Co, 1938. First American edition. Hardcover. Very good -. 593 pp. Octavo. [21.5 cm]. Black semi-glossy paper over boards. Deckled edges. Publisher's red top stain. Corners bumped, pages toned and lightly foxed. Gilt title stamped to spine, which has sustained some slight water damage on the cloth near the head. Text block just beginning to crack at the rear tail. Céline's "Mort à crédit" or "Death on the Installment Plan" revitalized the traditionalist French genre by its blending of Gothic styles with the more modern technique of blurring the lines between character and author. It is the companion to "Journey to the End of the Night". In 1938, shortly after this book's release John Walcott backhandedly idolizes the book for its grotesque narcissism and apolitical theme. Céline's openness to disgust and candor fed into what we now call "dark humor
