About This Item
Boston: Houghton, Mifflin & Co.,, 1901. Large paper edition, limited issue, number 92 of 600 sets. First published in seven volumes between 1837 and 1838, Lockhart's biography of his father-in-law Scott has since been recognized as one of the most significant works in the history of the genre. This copy is appropriately bound with gilt thistle tooling. For research, Lockhart (1794-1854) not only drew on his personal experience of Scott but interviewed those who also knew the author. His account conveyed "the near heroic regard in which Scott was held in his time" and portrayed "with the power of a successful novelist a character in vivid scenes of place and time" (ODNB). Ten volumes, octavo (218 x 148 mm). Finely bound in contemporary green crushed half morocco, spine with raised bands, compartments lettered and tooled with thistle motif in gilt, marbled sides and endpapers, top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges uncut, green bookmarkers. Colour frontispieces, 61 plates with tissue guards, colour illustrated half-title to vol. I, title pages printed in red and black. Spines uniformly faded and lightly marked, loss to a few headcaps, a couple small punctures to vol. X spine, boards bright, minor rubbing, loss to bookmarkers, internally clean. A very good set.
