First edition of Memoirs of Richard Cumberland by himself.In half calf binding and marbled board. The front board is detached. Containing an account of his life and writings, with anecdotes and characters of several of the most distinguished persons of his time, with whom he had a connection.Cumberland was an English dramatist and civil servant, known for his play 'The West Indian'. During the American War of Independence, Cumberland was a secret negotiator with Spain trying to bring around peace negotiations.With a frontispiece and three engraved plates. Collated, complete. In half calf binding and marbled boards. Externally, fair. The front board is detached. There is rubbing to the extremities and to the spine. There is wear to the boards with some slight loss and small marks. The rear hinge is strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with some occasional spots. Good Only
