London: David Stott, 1887. 458 pp + (1) pp publisher's advertising, 9" H. Tissue-covered sepiatone frontispiece. Inscribed on half title page: "For dearest Louisechen / from her devoted Sister / Helena (underlined with a flourish) / July. 1887. (underlined)". Helena Augusta Victoria was Queen Victoria's 5th child and married Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, becoming Princess Christian. The British Royal family were fond of German diminutives and the 'Louisechen' of the inscription could have been her younger sister, Louise Caroline Alberta, or her Prussian sister-in-law, wife of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, who was referred to as 'Louisechen' in family papers. The Duke served as Governor General of Canada in 1911 and 'Duchess of Connaught' has been pencilled above 'Louisechen' at some time. An interesting association copy. Some small splits to paper on inside hinges, a few pages with soft wrinkling at top corner, scattered light foxing marks on preliminary pages and on two rear pages, book is lightly cocked, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear, small slight bump at board corners, age/dust darkening to edges of text block - especially to the top, rubbing and soiling to boards.. Inscribed by editor.. Hard Cover. Good-.
