"The Ogam alphabet was an indigenous script of old Ireland named after Ogma, the Celtic God of Literature and Eloquence. The decorations are composed of Joyce's initials in Ogam and other characters together with other symbols that convey Joyce's concern with music, creation, feeling and his native Ireland. -- J. D. F. 7th November 1954."
