About This Item

New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1956 First trade edition (so stated). Very scarce thus! The true first trade edition is almost never encountered and must state "First Edition" on the copyright page. 459pp. Bibliography and index. Green cloth. Previous owner's signature on half-title page. Slight water dmage to bottom edge. Slight offsetting to front free endpaper. Overall, a nice copy in lightly worn pictorial dust jacket. An interwoven pageant of stories of the great westward expansion to California, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado. A good read, this work includes a "colorful gallery of characters: heroes and rascals, adventurers and plodders, men who invaded and tamed or were tamed by what geographers call the true Far West..."..
