[Gérard, Jean-Ignace-Isidore (1803 – 1847)], Grandville, Les Métamorphoses du Jour par Grandville Accompagnées d'un Texte par MM. Albéric Second, Louis Lurine, Clément Caraguel, Taxile Delord, H. De Beaulieu, Louis Huart, Charles Monselet, Julien Lemer Précédées d'une Notice sur Grandville par M. Charles Blanc. Nouvelle Édition Revue et complétée pour le texte par M. Jules Janin Augmentée de Nombreux Culs-de-Lampe, Têtes de Pages, Etc. Paris : Garnier Frères, Libraires-Éditeurs, 6, rue des Saints-Pères, et Palais-Royal, 215, 1869. 8vo. Collation : [ii; frontispiece, title-page (ii) ; lxiii ; 480 pages]. Bound in half red morocco on marbled boards. Five raised bands. Top page edge gilded. 71 full-page hand-colored wood-block plates bound in. This edition contains the same plates as the edition of 1854 and in the same order, but with these differences: 1) They do not have the name of the printer on them; 2) A majority of these plates are signed in the plate "J.-J. Grandville"; 3) These are printed on heavier paper; 4) On a great number of the plates the legends are modified or augmented. Some light foxing, but still a very good, untrimmed copy in a very secure binding. Enjoying great success during Grandville's lifetime, Les Métamorphoses du Jour put human language and human behavior into animals, thus creating a moral satire of human behavior. Les Métamorphoses du Jour first appeared in 1836. See: Vicaire, Vol. V, 787 – 788 ; Cartaret III : 284-285.

Denis, Charles, Select Fables. By Mr. Charles Denis. London: Printed for J. and R. Tonson and S. Draper, MDCCLIV. [1754] In-8, 21 cm. [frontispiece by C. Grignion; title-page; dedication to the Prince of Wales (ii); preface (xvii); contents (ix); 448 pages]. Rebound in quarter brown calf, five raised bands, gilt-decorated label, on twentieth century marbled boards. Occasional slight spotting.Following in the tradition of LaFontaine, Aesop, and -- if Quintilian is to be believed -- Hesiod, Charles Denis wrote fables that survive the Classical definition: A fable is no more than a moral instruction disguised under the allegory of an action. De La Motte said a fable was an epic poem in miniature, but with more freedom of subject and in the choice of actors. There are 120 fables in Denis's collection, the last was dedicated to His Grace, Thomas, the Archbishop of Canterbury titled "The Phoenix and the Owl." First edition. ESTC Cit. No. T101633.
