Book measures 195mm x 135mm approximately.

Nicely bound in full medium tan calf by Seton & Mackenzie. Spine with five gilt-ruled raised bands with elaborate gilt decoration to compartments and green title / author label. Twin gilt fillet borders with blind-tooled work and gilt cornices to both boards, with gilt central 'educational institute' motif in gilt, central to front board. Plain end-papers and paste-downs. All edges marbled.

CONDITION

Book is in nice tight condition and holding very firm. Boards exhibit some minor wear, occasional mark and some surface scratches with a few minor blemishes and small losses of surface leather. Very minor bumping to board corners.

Internally the contents are complete and in good clean condition. There is a little uniform very light toning and some foxing and spots towards endpapers, otherwise bright and clean.

INTERESTING

Henry Longueville Mansel (1820 to 1871) was an English philosopher and ecclesiastic. He was born at Cosgrove, Northamptonshire (where his father, also Henry Longueville Mansel, fourth son of General John Mansel, was rector). He was educated at Merchant Taylors' School, London and St John's College, Oxford. He took a double first in 1843 and became tutor of his college. He was appointed reader in moral and metaphysical philosophy at Magdalen College in 1855, and Waynflete Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy in 1859.
