About This Item
Mexico City, 1888. About very good.. 210,[6]pp. Contemporary quarter sheep and marbled boards, spine gilt. Spine leather scuffed in places, corners and edges with some moderate wear. Even toning and occasional foxing. First Mexican edition of this realist novel by Spanish writer Benito Pérez Galdós, published in 1888. Miau tells the story of a lower-middle class family in Madrid during the late 19th century; the protagonist is Ramón Villaamil, an ex-employée from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, who is attempting to regain his position following the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy. A newspaper library edition, and an interesting example of the transmission of 19th-century Spanish literature to Mexico. Several pages of advertisements at the rear promote not only the newspaper itself and other upcoming publications, but also a Mexico City piano maker and a dentist. Scarce, OCLC locates only one copy, at the BNM.
