About This Item

London: Collins, 1989. FIRST EDITION, first printing. Full blue cloth-like hardcover with gilt lettering on the spine. Excellent black & white illustrations and photographs between pages 144 and 145. Small penciled notation at the top corner and bottom left of the front endpage. Residue of a previous store's price sticker. Jacket has been price clipped. Overall a VERY GOOD book in a EXCELLENT brodart protected dust jacket. A good gift. Frederick Courteney Selous was a British explorer, hunter, and conservationist famous for his exploits in Southern Africa. His real-life adventures inspired Sir H. Rider Haggard to create the fictional Allan Quatermain character. Selous was also a good friend of Theodore Roosevelt and Frederick Russell Burnham. He was the older brother of ornithologist and writer Edmund Selous. This is the first biography of Selous since the one published by J. G. Millais in 1918. Well researched, the author presents a balanced look at the life of the man who was known to the press of his time as "The Mighty Nimrod". . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hardcover.
