About This Item
Blandford Press Ltd (Poole, Dorset), 1978. First Edition. Hardcover. Like New. GIFT QUALITY 1978 FIRST EDITION (U.K.) hardcover with dustjacket. WELL-PRESERVED, UNREAD COPY. Bright, well-bound pages and clean jacket. Very nice, collectible copy! "Nobody can fail to be thrilled by the overwhelming sound and glittering sight of a military band in all its pageantry with rich splendid uniforms and highly polished instruments. This volume recreates in detail those colourful and decorative uniforms of the military bands throughout the world, from the seventeenth century to the present time. Through the authentic black and white and full colour plates, complete with detailed text, are shown the diverse military band uniforms. The French armies of the Bourbons and Bonaparte, to the United States of America, the South American States and the military bands of the British, European, African, and Asian countries. Military Bands have always been treated with the most lavish care and expense. In the past, the Commanding Officer of the Regiment paid the cost of the uniform and instruments out of his own income, and the band became a status symbol. The silver drums and the Drum Major staffs were often purchased by countries, states, or counties. Although the main purpose of the military band was, by its pleasing brilliant turnout, to invite recruits to join the army it has nevertheless survived, and despite the changing world and methods of warfare the bandsmen still retain their elaborate and magnificent uniforms.
