"Here is the full story of the adoption in 1867 by the British Army of the famous Snider breech-loading rifle, and the subsequent search for a weapon of greater efficiency. The volume is in two parts. The first, the work of Captain Vivian Dering Majendie (then assistant Superintendent of the Royal Laboratory at Woolwich), was based on a series of lectures delivered to the Royal Artillery Institution in the years 1867-9. Among the subjects discussed were the problems of providing a suitable breech-loader for the Services, the Snider conversion and its competitors, the various official conversions applied to the obsolescent muzzle-loader then in use, the new weapons made on the Snider system, and the trials to replace the conversions which ultimately led to the adoption of the Martini-Henry. The second part of the book, the work of Captain C. Orde Browne, Captain-Instructor at the Royal Laboratory, describes in detail the construction of the various marks of service ammunition, their packaging and performance." book has light cigarette odour, light toning to the edges of the text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, minor edgewear, small tear (archivally taped) at the top edge.. Not Signed. Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover. Very Good+/Very Good.
