With six of the seven wood engraved plates by Allen, lacking the frontispiece. Contemporary green half calf with raised bands, gilt titles to red and brown labels, and elaborate gilt decoration to spine. Leather-grained green cloth over boards; all edges and endpapers marbled. Bound without the frontispiece. A little spotting to blank and endpapers, but otherwise an exceptionally crisp, clean copy. Tobacco scented. Moderate wear and bumping to binding; spine heavily toned with a few nicks. Very good. Evans' second novel, first published in 1860 under her pseudonym George Eliot.
