Memoirs of First Dog Millie Bush. Barbara Bush (ne Pierce; June 8, 1925 - April 17, 2018) was the first lady of the United States from 1989 to 1993 as the wife of George H. W. Bush, who served as the 41st president of the United States, and founder of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. She previously was the second lady of the United States from 1981 to 1989. Among her six children are George W. Bush, the 43rd president of the United States, and Jeb Bush, the 43rd governor of Florida. She and Abigail Adams are the only two women to be the wife of one U.S. president and the mother of another. Barbara Pierce was born in New York City. She met George Herbert Walker Bush at the age of sixteen, and the two married in Rye, New York in 1945, while he was on leave during his deployment as a Naval officer in World War II. They moved to Texas in 1948, where George later began his political career. The Bush's dog, Millie, describes a day in the life of George Herbert Walker Bush and family, discussing morning briefings, deliberations in the Oval Office, and short breaks for squirrel hunting. Derived from a Kirkus review: A shaggy dog book from the First Lady, who proves here that it's a dog's life--at least at the White House--by purporting to present the dictated memoirs of Mildred ""Millie"" Kerr Bush, the First Family's young, favorite pooch. "Our life at the White House is pretty heavily schedulized," Millie tells us, cueing us in to this lighthearted book's thrust: a tour of White House quarters and life with "Bar" and "The Prez"--from a dog's point of view, of course ("There are some wonderful beds. in the White House on the second floor. I have tried them all"; on the day a rat surfaced in the White House pool, "Thank heavens The Prez was there and stayed cool. He put in the pool scoop and got the rat in the net and did him in"). It's all very nice and all proceeds go to the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, and the 136 color photographs--some seen-help beef up the text.
