About This Item

Oxford : The Clarendon Press, 1905-1927. First edition. Leather. Good Only. 9" by 6". None. The complete three volumes of this poetical work. Compiled and edited by George Saintsbury, noted historian, scholar and critic. First editions of all volumes of this work. Comprising of works by several poets of the Caroline period including poems by Katherine Philips and Patrick Hannay, John Cleveland, Thomas Stanley and more. The Caroline Era is a period of English and Scottish history during the Stuart period which coincided with the reign of Charles I. It saw the flourishing of the Cavalier poets and the Metaphysical poets. In Zaehnsdorf bindings, as noted by binder's stamp to front pastedown. From the antiquarian library of Christopher Rowe. Christopher Rowe was a schoolmaster in Norwich and then in Bristol. Throughout his career he inspired many to love literature, history and music. He was a specialist on 17th century printer and bookseller, Humphrey Moseley and began his, unfortunately unfinished, PhD dissertation on him. George Saintsbury was a critic an editor of several anthological works. In full calf bindings with gilt stamping to spines. Externally, generally smart with slight rubbing to the joints and to the head and tail of spine. Loss to head of spine to volume I. Front hinge and joint to volume I has failed with the board detached. Rear joint and hinge are slightly strained but firm. Front hinge to volume III is tender, with the rear hinge slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown of all volumes, Christopher Rowe. Binder's stamp to the front pastedown, Zaehnsdorf. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the odd spot throughout. Good Only
