The cure was quinine from the bark of the cinchona tree. Quinine forced physicians to change their ideas about treating illnesses. The author describes the ravages of the disease, and how the cinchona seeds were smuggled out of Peru opening the door to Western imperial adventure in Asia, Africa, and beyond.
