Description

London: Cunningham and Mortimer, 1842. Book. Illus. by George Cruikshank. VG-. Decorative Cloth. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Complete in three (3) volumes, as originally issued ("three-decker" format), uniformly bound in original brown publisher's cloth, all covers decorated in blind, lettered in gilt on spine panels, deckled text block edges. Ex-libris book plate of A. Edward Newton, Oak Knoll mounted on front pastedown of each volume. viii,296 + iv,291 + iv,311 pp., illus. w/ a total of (20) engraved plates by George Cruikshank. First edition in book form, after initial serialization in Ainsworth's Magazine. Moderate shelf wear, but complete and fully intact. All volumes with slight but not objectionable binding leans, rubbed corners showing at least some exposure, several corners layered, mild rubbing to spine extremities and a bit of surface rubbing to cover cloth. Several hinges starting, all bindings firm. Collated and complete, with all plates present and intact, and properly placed (final two, locations not specified on list of illustrations, occur at pp. 212 and 308 of Vol. III), several displaying slight to moderate foxing, with tissue guards in Vol. I only. Vol. I front pastedown shows original binder's tag of Runting & Jeffcoat, East Harding Street, mounted at bottom binding corner. Originally catalogued as lot #3 in the 1941 three-volume catalog of Newton's library auctioned by Parke-Bernet, where described as "a few plates slightly foxed. . . . original cloth, uncut; covers slightly stained, somewhat worn, a few pages lightly foxed." Respectably preserved, solid VG slightly downgraded due to exposed corners (a "mere" cosmetic issue), with a most desireable provenance..

About Saucony Book Shop Pennsylvania, United States

Biblio member since 2005
Seller rating: This seller has earned a 5 of 5 Stars rating from Biblio customers.

The Saucony Book Shop, located in the heart of scenic rural Berks County, epicenter of Pennsylvania German folk culture (our shop specialty), offers a full range of gently used, rare, and antiquarian books, with many volumes of scholarly merit and an unabashed emphasis on the quaint, the curious, and the utterly obscure. We make no attempt to be a general-service book shop. Our inventory is highly selective, individually chosen from among the hundreds of thousands of books to which we have access annually at auctions, library and estate sales, and through individual scouts and vendors. We do not handle material that does not meet our expectations in terms of condition or interest to our specialized, idiosyncratic customers. Despite maintaining a browsing inventory of more than 15,000 volumes, we have minimized our carbon footprint by maintaining our entire operation in a cozy ca. 1890 barn and lean-to adjacent to an historic creamery in rural Maxatawny Township. Our shop is available for browsing by appointment and occasionally, in temperate weather, by chance, so email or call ahead to peruse the eclectic selection gracing our shelves, or ask our ferociously over-read staff for recommendations. Selling antiquarian books of merit since 1981. Full search and appraisal services; always keenly interested in purchasing quality used books, whether by the piece or by the bushel. Thanks for reading about us! Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
