About the author

R. Thomas Hille, AIA, is an architect, designer, educator, and researcher based in Seattle, Washington. He has a special interest in school design and the architectural potential of environments for learning. He has designed a number of award-winning schools, including White River High School in Buckley, Washington, winner of CEFPI's 2005 James D. MacConnell Award for Architectural Excellence. He has taught at MIT, the University of Michigan, the Catholic University of Chile, and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art. His previous publications include an interactive multimedia study of the relationship between form and meaning in architecture, and a monograph on the houses of West Coast modernist William W. Wurster.
