He authored a number of books and articles and was twice awarded the Palmes Academiques. He was born in Bulgaria but spent most of his career in France. This work has become a classic and captures as a snapshot in time the Soviet Society when it was on the cusp of dissolution--which can be asserted started when the Berlin Wall came down.
